At Church last week we heard about a high school Regatta down on the Potomac river. A few of the girls in the ward race, or are on a "crew" for their schools. Emily said, "Crew? What's 'crew'?" The local girls gaped, "You don't know what 'crew' is?" Nope. Well, we found out. It was very interesting and looked like a very fun sport to participate in. It is a lot of hard work though!
After watching the races for a while we walked down to the dock where they loaded and unloaded. It was a very choreographed event.Then we saw that they were renting canoes and kayaks! We were feeling spontaneous and rented two canoes and kayak for the seven of us. We had a fantastic time canoeing in the Potomac river! We went around the tip of Roosevelt Island. Next time we will plan to have a picnic there. There will be a next time. It was cheap fun!
We didn't take our cameras with us because we were worried that they would get wet. You'll just have to pretend that this is us!
After the canoeing we were still feeling spontaneous and decided to find the National Cathedral.
It is the sixth largest cathedral in the world. I've been a few of the others and even though this is a modern building--just completed in 1990, although it took 80 years to build--it had the look, feel, smell, everything, of the gothic cathedrals I've seen in Italy. It is an Episcopal Cathedral, but it is open to all faiths and is used for State funerals, and other noteworthy events. Martin Luther King gave his last speech here.
We had the luck to overhear the Cathedral choir rehearsing in a room in the basement. It was the boys choir getting ready for their big concert with the Canterbury Cathedral choir (boys choir too). I would have loved to have gone to that concert! But it was nearly sold out and I didn't want to pay so much money for a very bad seat.
